Trim Your YouTube Videos With These Simple Steps

Back in the day (pre-2011), once you uploaded your video to YouTube, your video was hosted and shared, but couldn’t be changed. If you wanted to trim off the end, you had to edit your video by using a separate platform and upload it again.

Youtube Home Screen in TabletThankfully, nowadays you can trim slice and edit your uploaded YouTube videos without losing video views. This means that your view count and comments, and all existing links to your video will continue to work. No re-uploading is required. Below are five steps to trim your YouTube videos successfully:

1. Go to Video Manager/Video

Be logged into your YouTube account. Hover your mouse over the upper right-hand corner of the screen. Click on your Avatar icon and then select Creator Studio. Once you click on this it will launch your dashboard for your YouTube channel. Mouse over to the left-hand side and click on ‘Video Manager’ or ‘Video’. Video manager displays all the unlisted, private, and public videos you have uploaded to your channel.

2. Trim the video

Click open the video you want to trim. Then click on ‘Editor’ tab located on the left side of your screen. This will take you to screen with below layout:

Below your video is the box with ‘Trim’ option and other functions such as adding music.

On the upper right side of your screen, there are options such as discard changes, save, or find out keyboard features.

On the left side, there’s Undo and Redo buttons, just in case you are not satisfied with changes or want previous changes back.

When you start trimming, you can see ‘Preview’ option below so you can preview changes before saving.

3. Start Trimming Your Video

To start trimming, first determine portions of video you’d like to clip out.

Now follow the below steps for trimming:

  • Click the ‘Trim’ button.
  • Click on the portion from where you’d like to start clipping
  • Click the ‘Split’ button below the box
  • Start dragging the line from where you started clipping till end portion of the section you want to remove
  • You can now preview the changes before saving by clicking on ‘Preview’ button below the box.
  • You can always make changes like adding music, increasing or reducing video speed, and others.

Once you are satisfied with the changes, click on ‘Save’ button on the upper right-hand side.

4. Save it as public or private

Go back to Video Manager and set your new edited video to “private” or “public” depending on what you want. Note that the video will automatically save to public, so change this immediately if you need to.
